Studying Law & admission to the Malaysian Bar

Posted by Mr.K on 23rd September and posted in Australian Universities, Hong Kong Universities, Irish Universities, Law degree, Law School, New Zealand Universities, Singapore Universities, UK Universities

A parent recently raised the issue with me about Law and which qualifications are deemed acceptable for admission to the Malaysian Bar. Some research lead me to a very interesting article here: High time for a new Bar

Apart from bemoaning the standard of new lawyers coming through the system the article lists the appropriate universities and courses, both internationally (mostly UK, Australia and NZ) and within Malaysia. It’s interesting to note that no North American universities are qualified, nor is the law degree in Hong Kong recognised for purposes of admission to the Malaysian Bar. Three universities in Singapore and one in Ireland are also recognised.

For admission requirements for Malaysian citizens studying in Australia or NZ you can read the guidelines or download more information here.

So if you are a Malaysian citizen and looking to practice in Malaysia please do choose your institutions wisely. And study hard too so that you will return with more than “rudimentary legal skills” that are better than “good to grotesque”

    Sir/Mdm/Ms,

Good evening. May I ask a few questions please.

Q1: A Malaysian graduated LLB in NUS (Singapore)with only Third Class Degree – is he/she eligible for admission into Malaysian Bar and to be qualified as a lawyer?

Q2: A Malaysian graduated LLB in Cardiff University (UK) with only a Third Class Degree – is he/she eligible for admission into Malaysian Bar and to be qualified as a lawyer?

Q3: Is the LLB programme & Bar Professional Tranning Course (BPTC) in Cardiff University UK recognised by Malaysian government?

    Thank-you.

    Dear Sir,
I’m a Malaysian currently working in Indonesia.
I possess a Degree in Education (TESL) and have been working since 1989 in both Academics (Lecturer) and Education Management. I intend to do LLB in UK soon and I would like to have the list of Universities recognized in Malaysia. Thank you.
