University visits – 3 excellent choices

Next week is very busy with university visits. All presentations will be held in B106 from 12.30pm onwards. Students can bring their lunch with them.
Please read through the following information to determine if any of these institutions might be right for you. Year 12’s and 11’s are especially encouraged to attend.
Tuesday 15/11 – University of Alberta, Edmonton
UA is a progressive university in a booming region of Canada. It offers over 200 undergraduate programs that students can choose as majors or minors (http://www.international.ualberta.ca/prospective/undergraduate.cfm)
As one of Canada’s top 5 research institutions, UA has plentiful opportunities for students to engage in undergraduate research (even including our nanotechnology lab), co-op, and internship programs
UA has generous scholarship opportunities for international students, some of the most generous of all universities in Canada (http://www.international.ualberta.ca/prospective/undergradscholarships.cfm)
UA offers substantial credit transfer/advanced standing for students who score 6s and 7s on their IB exams, among other advantages for IB students (http://www.registrar.ualberta.ca/ro.cfm?id=261)
Students have the opportunity to work in Canada for up to 3 years after finishing their degrees, meaning they can get international work experience here that can be useful to their career prospects at home or abroad

Wednesday 16/11 – Queen Mary, University of London – http://www.qmul.ac.uk/
Queen Mary, University of London (informally Queen Mary, QMUL or QM) is a public research university located in London, United Kingdom and a constituent college of the federal University of London. With roots dating back to 1785, Queen Mary was formed by the merger of four historic colleges, and since joining the University of London in 1915 has grown to become one of its largest colleges. QM is one of the UK’s top ranked universities – recently ranked 11th nationally out of 132 universities in the latest Research Assessment Exercise and their School of Medicine and Dentistry was ranked 1st in London.
Thursday 17/11 – NYU Abu Dhabi – http://nyuad.nyu.edu/
NYU Abu Dhabi is a new campus of the respected New York University located in the UAE. It is a research based university with a fully integrated liberal arts and science college which draws students from around the world. It is highly selective but does offer some generous scholarships for top students at preferred schools (Uplands is one their preferred schools). Uplands can nominate two of our top students who will be eligible for paid trip (hotel, flights and some expenses) to visit the campus in Abu Dhabi. There is also material in the Universities Office that can be viewed, as well as a presentation.
Also this Monday 14/11 a representative from Nottingham Trent http://www.ntu.ac.uk/ will be in school. If any student is particularly interested in this university please contact me by Monday morning to arrange a meeting.
Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is a public teaching and research university in Nottingham, United Kingdom. It was founded as a new university in 1992 from the existing Trent Polytechnic (later Nottingham Polytechnic), however it can trace its roots back to 1843 with the establishment of the Nottingham Government School of Design which still exists within the university today. Nottingham Trent University is one of the largest universities in the United Kingdom with around 24,000 students split over three different campuses.
