Columbia University

Some updates from Columbia University that might be useful to US applicants in general as well as those considering Columbia.

Columbia University is one of the oldest and most distinguished institutions of higher learning in the world.  Established in 1754 in New York City, Columbia since its founding has been at the center of the nation’s academic and cultural life.  As great minds have migrated to the United States, they have often turned to Columbia for their education and training.  This is where Enrico Fermi first split the atom, where Federico Garcia Lorca penned his thoughts, where V.K. Wellington Koo first negotiated between different cultures and Pixley Ka Isaka Seme became a leader.

University of Hong Kong – Update

Posted by Mr.K on 17th October and posted in Asian Universities, Hong Kong Universities, Scholarships and awards

Please find following an email from HKU. Some very important points for those considering Hong Kong.

I am writing to you at this time to update you on all the new happenings here at HKU, and as we embark on our 2012 admissions exercise, it is truly an exciting year for us. In addition to celebrating our Centenary, it is also the year when undergraduate education in Hong Kong will experience a unique transformation, introducing a newly designed 4-year degree curriculum.
We have also introduced a number of new programmes in addition to new elements to our admissions process.
Highlights of this year’s admission
More places available (for 2012 only)
To smooth the transition, HKU will be offering the existing 3-year degree curriculum alongside the new 4-year degree curriculum, and will have double the number of undergraduate degree places for non-local students.
Curriculum Reform
We have re-examined how the goals of an undergraduate education in the 21st century have changed over the last decade, resulting in a new HKU curriculum that has been the focus of attention worldwide.
More scholarships
We will have up to double the number of entrance scholarships to be awarded in 2012.
Increasing competitiveness
HKU had a record 42,500 applications for undergraduate study in 2011, resulting in a truly outstanding intake of talented students from around the world.
Fast Track application
A new feature of our admissions process for top students or those considering HKU as their first choice university is that they can choose to apply by November 1, 2011, to be considered earlier by their first choice programme.
We value whole-person education, whereby providing our students with academic, non-academic and professional experiences at an international level we hope to add value to the person they will become when they graduate. For more information on the University, our study programmes, admission requirements and details, please visit our website at http://www.hku.hk/admission, or contact us at intl@hku.hk.

Blog for UCAS! Deadline Friday 14 October!

Posted by Mr.K on 13th October and posted in Uncategorized

Here’s a great opportunity.

Tell your UCAS story: Blog to thousands
Put your writing skills to the test and inspire your peers

We want creative people to write about what it’s like applying to uni for UCAS Connect. Visited by over 50,000 people in August alone, it’s a great place to get your work seen.

To take part, send us up to 300 words on your experience so far – the highs, lows, the hardest parts and what you wish you’d known before. We’re looking for an honest account so don’t be afraid to say how you feel. We’ll choose six blogs to be published at ucasconnect.com, and there will be prizes throughout the year for the most influential or engaging pieces. Find out more from John at UCAS >

Enter before 14 October 2011.

So what are you waiting for? Get blogging! >

Here’s some guidance on what we’d like to see…
In your blog, focus on key topics throughout the application process – applying, waiting for decisions, open days / conventions, getting advice, choosing a uni, waiting for results etc.
Think about how you’d feel reading the content – does it answer questions, provide tips, appeal to you, is it engaging, would you want to read more?
Talk freely about your experiences – good and bad; we want it to be a true account of what you’re going through. But there are two points that we have to abide by:
• No offensive language
• No promotion of alcohol.
Other than that, say what you like!
Every three months, we’ll review all the posts over that period and there will be prizes for the most engaging content.
If you’d like to know more, and to send your extracts, email us at ucasonline@ucas.ac.uk

Year 13 deadlines approaching!

Posted by Mr.K on 12th October and posted in Uncategorized

1) For those intending to lodge standard applications to US/UK/Canada via the school – you have just under three weeks to get them finished  (November 1)

2) For those needing references from teachers for the above you have less than one week to request them (using the standard request form)

If unable to meet the above deadlines for a particular (and valid) reason you MUST SEE ME to confirm this by next week.

If unwilling to meet the above deadlines I am happy to refer you to education agents who will help you through the process.

If applying to somewhere outside of the above that has a later application deadline please consult with me to set out an application timeline.

3) IB students MUST advise Ms. Atkins about where their IB results must be sent. A-Level students can see me. DO NOT NEGLECT TO DO THIS. Last year students and the school were inconvenienced because they had forgotten to do this. One students was taken out of his university classes and refused entry until they received confirmation of his results. So don’t forget!!!!

Till next time…

Year 13 – teacher references & due dates.

Posted by Mr.K on 7th October and posted in Uncategorized

Just over three weeks to go till applications must be finished!

If you require a teacher to provide a reference you must download this form and take it to the teacher concerned. Alternatively you may collect a form from the Universities Office.

All reference requests must be made by October 19th. If you do not request a reference by this date we will presume you are not proceeding with an application this year (apart from the following).

If your university application is non-standard please see Mr. Klar to determine what timeframe you need to work in.
